Member Experience
Being a member of The Junior League of Indianapolis means being part of a group of women dedicated to making an impact on their community, developing their potential, and lifting each other up. Membership looks different for everyone. But we are united by our desire to develop our potential, improve communities, and promote voluntarism.
Leadership for Women
We understand the challenges women in leadership face every day. Our goal is to make leadership experiences accessible to all women.
Valuing Your Time
Our members wear many hats—employees, bosses, mothers, partners, daughters, friends, and more. That’s why we offer leadership opportunities with varying time commitments, allowing members to find what works best for them.
Providing Diverse Opportunities
With diverse interests come diverse leadership opportunities. We offer members the chance to develop skills across all aspects of the League’s operations, ensuring meaningful growth in areas that matter most to them.
Creating Safe Spaces
Our members seek to enhance their leadership skills in a supportive environment. The League fosters a unique space where women can be both challenged and championed by others who share the same Mission.
Room for Growth
Growth is at the heart of our mission. We empower members to take on larger roles within the League and beyond, leveraging our expansive network of community partners to create meaningful opportunities.
Responsibilities
Members of The Junior League of Indianapolis have responsibilities based on their years of service.
Annual Dues: Every member pays an annual fee to maintain her membership. Dues are used to fund the JLI’s work in the community, to cover administrative expenses, and provide training/education locally and from the Association of Junior Leagues International.
General Membership Meetings: The JLI hosts a monthly General Membership Meeting (GMMs) where important information and updates are shared with members. They may be held virtually or in-person, usually in various locations around Indianapolis. These meetings are often held in conjunction with a training, guest speaker, or social activity. We provide a social hour and snacks prior to the start of the meeting. Member are expected to attend at least 4 GMMs a year, but many members attend many or all!
League Placement: Active members are required to hold a League placement, which can be thought of as a “job”. Every year, members choose a placement role in the league; opportunities include planning community service experiences, helping choose the recipients of our grants (we give out roughly $60,000 in grants each year), developing training for members,, and more!
Training & Volunteer Requirements: We value providing members the flexibility to choose how they meet these requirements, so we call these “flex credits.” Members can choose from a variety of training and volunteer opportunities, planned by the JLI, to fulfill their annual 4 flex credit requirements.
Fund Development Support: Members are asked to support the League’s fundraising events throughout the year – with the most popular events being Holiday Mart (where members are required to work a 4-hour shift) and Women’s Leadership Summit. Additional opportunities to participate in fundraising efforts is encouraged, with many members making monthly donations to the JLI Annual Fund, which helps support our Mission.
AJLI
The Junior League of Indianapolis is part of the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI). As part of this network, our members can take their membership beyond the Indianapolis metro area.
Transfer Members who leave the Indianapolis area can transfer their membership to over 200 other Junior Leagues and many of our most engaged members were Transfers themselves to Indianapolis – we look forward to welcoming any League leader who would like to transfer her membership to Indianapolis.
AJLI provides members the opportunity to build connections beyond their local League with in-person and virtual opportunities for personal and organizational development. As a world-wide organization, membership in the Association provides members the opportunity to experience training and development from some of the world’s best speakers and leaders.
