Membership

The Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI) includes more than 600 New, Active and Sustaining members. Members of the JLI are accomplished collaborators who build coalitions, identify community needs, and develop effective and responsive programs to serve those needs. As an organization, we are committed to our Mission: to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. This group of dedicated women are executives, community leaders, entrepreneurs, mothers, and professionals from diverse backgrounds who call Indianapolis their home.

If you are interested in making a difference in Indianapolis and developing your leadership skills, the Junior League of Indianapolis is the place for you.

The Membership Experience

Being a member of The Junior League of Indianapolis means joining a community of women dedicated to bettering their community, themselves, and each other. We bring together women with different backgrounds, skill sets, and interests every day to accomplish this.

Our goal is to create a unique space where women can make lifelong friends, grow their leadership skills, learn about the pressing issues in our community, and give back.

Membership Levels

The Junior League of Indianapolis provides the opportunity for lifelong membership. During their League careers, members participate in three levels of membership. These transitions allow members to develop their potential and share their knowledge with other women leaders.

New Members

Members in Training

New members are JLI members in their first six months  of membership. During their new member period (which runs June-December and January-May), they participate in a robust training program designed to help them learn more about our Mission and the work we do to accomplish it, the Indianapolis community, the area of community impact we focus our efforts toward (currently that is Foster and Kinship Care) and discover how they can be part of the League’s work to build better communities.

Actives

Members Leading our Impact

Active members serve as the League’s primary boots on the ground. Each Active member has a League “job”, or placement, based on her interests and availability. Active placement ranges from the committee member level to our largest leadership positions, like serving on our Management Council (Operations Board) or Board of Directors (Strategic and Governance Board).  Areas of impact include but are not limited to direct community service roles, event planning for fundraising efforts like our longest tradition, Holiday Mart, to planning leadership development trainings for members, and many more. Placement is designed to provide each member a customized league experience.

Sustainers

Members Preserving our Legacy

Sustaining members are no longer required to hold a League placement, but continue to support the League through their time, talents, and giving. Sustainers leverage their leadership experience to mentor our JLI members, and many go on to participate in and lead some of Indianapolis’ most iconic institutions.

Change Makers

The Junior League has continued to impact the Indianapolis community for over 100 years because of our members. Each year, JLI members contribute 15,000 volunteer hours through direct service, fundraising and league placements. Volunteering their time, leveraging their skills, and bringing their own perspectives, our members each have an impact unique as they are.

Each year we recognize a few members who go above and beyond for the League, their fellow members, and the Indianapolis community. These women set the example for future generations of League members. Meet our award winners!
